200 Series Land Cruiser: Lower Control Arm Replacement

This is a high-level overview for 200 Series Land Cruiser: Lower Control Arm replacement. It is not a detailed how-to, but it does provide basic information and the required OEM parts.

Let me introduce you to my wife's 2009 LX570, AKA "The Silver Fox". This has been a great vehicle with only very minor maintenance required over the last 8 years and 130k miles of ownership. I recently had my local Toyota dealer perform the coolant valley leak repair (most common issue on all vehicles with the 5.7L V8) and while it was there they noted that the front lower control arm bushings were quite worn. At the same time, the local online Toyota dealers were holding a 20% off sale, so I purchased replacement control arms and all the hardware. It is important you purchase all the hardware because it is very common for the hardware to corrode and seize to the arms, which requires you to cut the existing mounting hardware off with a saw-zall. The below picture shows all the parts and associated part numbers.

The control arms come with the lower ball joint installed, so you just need to unbolt the arms and replace. Easier said than done as the hardware is known to seize to the arms. For me, I had one arm that was seized and one that was not. I would also recommend a paint pen to mark the current orientation of the mountain hardware. That way you can get it close and good enough to drive the vehicle to the alignment shop. Good saw-zall blades make a huge difference, so I would have some of these on hand: Diablo Demo Demon Blades. The job is not overly hard, just be ready to cut the hardware out if needed. On-road improvements were very noticeable, less road wander and tighter steering.
